Travel :: Visiting Washington, DC

One of my favorite places my husband and I have lived over the years was Washington, DC. The Capitol is one of my favorite spots in the entire city, but I may be a bit biased since I interned and worked for a Congressman there. That experience gave me the opportunity to visit a lot of places I may not have seen in our 2 years there.

I also learned how to get the better tours (in my opinion) for many of the big sites because I actually scheduled them for my boss' constituents. I also gave private tours of the Capitol which is the best way to see it. So if you're heading to DC anytime soon, definitely don't miss this!

If you're not visiting DC anytime soon, there are some old photos here you might get a kick out of!

Monuments

The Capitol Building

My favorite building in all of DC! The best way to see this is to call your local Congressman or Senator and schedule a free tour with one of their interns or staff members. Times are flexible and instead of a 20-30 person group tour, its usually just your small group and maybe another family if you're there in the summer. Don't get me wrong, sometimes interns are not good at these tours and they can be awkward. But it will still be better than the group tour and if you meet in the lawmaker's office, you'll get to see the underground that connects all of the House and Senate office buildings to the Capitol.

Yikes, old picture! This is in the crypt below the Capitol dome. The star I'm standing on is the center of DC!

The White House

These tours are tough to get, but if you plan in advance and don't have anything on your record, you should be able to get in. You can schedule these through your Congressman or Senator but they will need your social security number for the background check. Give them a bunch of days as options to increase your chances of getting approved. They used to request tours up to 6 months in advance but you wouldn't find out until a month or two before if you got in, I'm assuming that is still the policy but check with your local lawmaker's office. Personally I thought the White House tour was so-so until we went during Christmastime and all the decor was beautiful!

Another tour to look out for, which is better than you would think, is the White House Garden tour that happens in both the Fall and Spring. You get to walk around the gardens that face the Washington Monument, take photos (you can't take them on the inside tour) and see the Rose Garden.

The Washington Monument

This was shut down after the earthquake but it's open now so make sure you order tickets online. It will save you time and I really enjoyed seeing DC from the top! My husband was planning to propose next to the Washington Monument but I complained I was too cold and wanted to go home... ha!

Jefferson Memorial

One of my favorite stops in DC, especially during the Cherry Blossom Festival! If you come in the Spring, bring your patience because its packed by the Cherry Blossoms but so worth it! Walk around the entire tidal basin if you can and take a paddle boat ride. So fun!

Whoa short hair!

Lincoln Monument & War Memorials

I'm clumping these together because they are all right next to each other and they are all a must see. The Lincoln is especially beautiful at night! Don't expect to walk from the Lincoln to the Capitol unless you don't mind walking 2 miles, it looks closer than it actually is!

Arlington Cemetery

If you have time, it's definitely worth stopping at Arlington Cemetery. We saw the change of the guard and walked around the grounds before snapping this picture with a view.

The Library of Congress

If you're not that into books its okay, I would just go to the LOC for the architecture. It's such a beautiful building on the inside. I wish I had gone to the main areas more often, but working on "the Hill" meant sometimes I was doing research in the lower, ugly levels of the LOC. Not as cool, let me tell you.

Museums

I won't go into detail but some of my favorites were the American History Museum (to see Dorothy's ruby slippers), Smithsonian Museum of Natural History (to see the Hope diamond), the Air and Space Museum, and the Portrait Gallery.

Restaurants/Cafes

Old Ebbit Grille

One of my favorite restaurants in the city, just a block from the White House. It's historic and has delicious food, I've never been disappointed with a meal there. My favorites were the crabcakes! Fun fact: We had dinner there the night my husband proposed!

Chef Geoffs

This is also near the White House and has really great prices (for DC) and delicious food. They have great happy hour specials and even have them on the weekends.

Baked and Wired

This place is super trendy, I almost wasn't hipster enough to be in there but I went anyway. You can get coffee, cupcakes and pastries. P.S. the cupcakes have bad ass names.

Georgetown Cupcake

As a certified cupcake tester (I wish), I think these are delicious cupcakes. However, waiting in that line and paying that much for them isn't cool. So unless you really want to try it because of the TV show, I'd skip GC or at least order online so you can skip the line and just pick up your cupcakes!

Farmers and Fishers

This is also in Georgetown, right down by the waterfront. It's casual, has decent prices and a fun menu, and good food. I've never been for brunch but I hear its great!

La Bettola Italiano

This isn't actually in DC, its in Arlington but just across the river. It's one of my absolute favorite restaurants of all time and I miss it! It's rarely busy which we never understood because its so good, kind of one of those hole-in-the-wall tiny Italian places. Baked pasta + house wine = perfect night.

Drinks

Happy hour is big in DC, it basically the only time I went out for drinks if I got off work early enough. Everything is expensive so if you can grab a cocktail during happy hour your wallet will thank you! I loved going to the Georgetown Waterfront for drinks but there are so many places to choose from. I also loved La Tasca for their sangria (Blanca is my fave) and tapas.

If you want to get out of the city, head out about an hour from downtown to the wineries. It's beautiful, especially in the Fall, and the wine is so delish! My favorites are Barrel Oak Winery and Aspen Dale Winery. You can bring your fur child to both!

Shopping

If you don't mind the high taxes, head to Georgetown or the Downtown/Chinatown area for shopping in DC.

You can see more pictures from my last trip to DC here! Spoiler alert: I went to a lot of the restaurants and wineries then!

Anyone else have any favorites in the DC area? If anyone is visiting DC, feel free to ask me if you have any questions and hopefully I can answer them!

Frozen Pup Treats + Our Weekend

I hope you all had a great weekend! Ours was disgustingly hot. Like, the only way you could rationalize going outside of the air conditioning was if your feet were in a body of water and there was a cold drink your hand.

We briefly stopped by Isle of Palms beach on Sunday before heading over to the Daniel Island Waterfront Park. We had never been on Daniel Island and now I understand the high cost of real estate there because its so charming! We just walked around and took some photos in the small park while sweating buckets and finally heading home to Ruby.

I thought Ruby could use a new treat since she has been through a lot lately, and with the weather as hot as it is, I opted to try a frozen treat. Considering she is one of those dogs that takes about 10 minutes to eat a treat, I assumed these were pup-approved when she downed this one in about a minute!

Frozen Peanut Butter and Yogurt Dog Treats
Recipe from 17 Apart

Ingredients:
1/4 cup All Natural Creamy Peanut Butter, melted slightly
4 oz. Plain Greek Yogurt
Carrot shavings (optional)

Silicone molds or ice trays work the best for these since you can just pop the treats out very easily.

Silicone Paw Mold {similar here and here}

If you want to add some shaved carrots or sweet potato, just mix the shavings into the greek yogurt before adding to the mold. I did it with the first batch I tried because Ruby likes carrots.

Fill the openings on the tray about halfway with the greek yogurt. Pick up and drop the mold several times to get the yogurt in all the crevices and to make room for the peanut butter.

Repeat the process with peanut butter and freeze for about 3-4 hours. So easy! Perfect for spoiling your pup on a hot summer day!

So how was your weekend? Hot like ours? If anyone has any other frozen dog treat recipes let me know, these were a hit for Ruby!

Friday Favorites

Happy Friday! It's completely blowing my mind that we're nearing the end of July. I'm not sure where this month went but we've got some fun things coming up so I'm excited!

Today I'm linking up with Amanda, Karli, and Amy and for my weekly dose of Friday faves!

Favorite Furry Paws

Is it me or do Ruby's paws look like little furry boots? This is what happens when the vet trims your pup for surgery, it looks ridiculous and cute at the same time. Her staples are getting removed today and it seems like her recovery is doing better this time around, thank goodness!

Favorite Clearance Find

I don't normally find much at the Gap Outlet normally but I picked up these shorts there last weekend for $9! Stylish shorts for under ten bucks? Sign me up. Don't forget to flash your super cool AAA card if you have one for 10 percent off.

Favorite First Glimpse of Fall

Quilted Puffer Vest

So I'm not trying to rush Fall (that's a lie) but I'm loving the vests at J. Crew Factory and can't wait to snatch one up! I'm thinking of adding a monogram to it. They also have the black and white herringbone vest again, which luckily I got my hands on before they sold out last year, but make sure you get it early!

Favorite Snack for on the Go
Fruit Strips

Because I'm too old to buy Fruit Roll Ups, I'm really enjoying these fruit strips as an easy, sweet treat!

Favorite New Tunes

Loving the Sam Smith album lately, his voice is so good! You can listen to the whole album here. Anyone else a fan?

I hope you all have a fab weekend! We've got some plans with friends tonight and a beach trip on Sunday (finally!) so I'm ready to get this weekend started!

Summer Skin Care (for the cheap gals)

We're halfway through the week! Not that I want to rush the summer along, but I'm just counting down the days until August when my day job slows down a bit and I can catch up on the five thousand things on my to-do list!

I'm also looking forward to some cooler days here in Charleston, though I know those are a long way off. Don't get me wrong, I love the summer. But summers in Charleston (with approximately 3425% humidity) wreak havoc on my already difficult hair and my skin!

One of the things I was really good about doing before our wedding was taking good care of my skin on a normal basis and I've been really bad about doing that until recently. Let's not get started on the love chub and my lack of gym appearances!

So today I thought I'd share some of the products I use with my summer skin care routine and see if y'all have any other good recommendations.

Disclaimer: I'm super cheap and hate spending a lot of money on products that may or may not work. I usually get a few free samples from Sephora before committing to the real thing. I'm sure there are other, better, more pricey options out there but these are what seem to work for my complexion and my budget!

Caladryl Lotion: I think I've raved about this before but this is one of those cheap tricks my Mom taught me in high school when I was battling zits and I swear by it! I put a dot of Calamine on any problem areas, or areas that look a little iffy, and they dry up within a day or two! It's also good for a lot of other uses (I think I may be like the Dad in My Big Fat Greek Wedding with his bottle of Windex... anyone?)

Olay Regenerist At Home Microdermabrasion Kit: I only use this about once a month because I also use the Philosophy Peel Pads (see below) but I love it. For a relatively low cost, it makes my face feel so soft and clean! I think it helps even my skin tone, but who knows, maybe it's just in my head?! Either way, I'll keep using it!

Philosophy Microdelivery Mini Peel Pads: I've been using these about once a week and I really like how soft my face feels after! Plus they are easy to use. They leave sort of a weird feeling on your skin until you wash your face afterwards but I definitely notice a brighter skin tone and some smaller pores (it's got a lot of work to do on this face) after a few uses.

Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Dry Touch Suntan Lotion: This stuff is the best for your face in the summer. I put it on before my makeup sometimes if I know I'll be outside for an extended amount of time. It doesn't make your face feel oily at all.

Ponds Dry Skin Cream: Like the Caladryl, I use this on repeat all year long. Even though my face is more oily in the summer, I still put this on in the morning because it makes me feel so refreshed!

Also, not pictured, I love Biore pore strips! Those bad boys are amazing and kind of gross at the same time.

So what are some of your favorite products? Anyone else do mini- facials at home?

Travel :: Visit Pittsburgh

I hope you all had a great weekend! We had a very lazy and relaxing weekend, just what we needed after being stressed and on the go so much lately! It was the kind where you watch the last 6 episodes of Orange is the New Black all in one day. Perfection!

On to the good stuff. I've been wanting to do this post for a while and sort of wrap it into a few Travel Tuesday posts to take advantage of how many places we've lived in the past couple of years and share some "insider" tips for those of you who may be making a trip! On the agenda: Pittsburgh, DC, and Charleston!

I know Pittsburgh isn't at the top of everyone's bucket list for a trip, but if you have a free weekend its a great place to visit, especially in the summer! Here is just a rundown of my favorite spots and restaurants you don't want to miss!

Sporting Events

Pittsburgh is known for their sports. It's impossible to grow up there without becoming a diehard Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins fan. All three of our professional teams have new stadiums and arenas, two of which are right on the water with a gorgeous skyline view. If you're there in the summer, don't miss a Pirates game! Make sure to get some pierogies while you're there! (Anyone heard of those?!)

The Pirates and Steelers stadiums are on the North Shore, right by the brand new casino if you're into that!

Such an old photo! And easily the coldest game I've ever been to!

The Pens arena is also brand new. I haven't been for a game yet but we took a look around inside and its so nice! If you're a hockey fan, definitely put this on your list!

Pittsburgh Zoo

My goddaughter up close and personal with the tiger!
The Pittsburgh Zoo is definitely one of the top zoos in the country, even if you don't have kids with you. The Polar Bear exhibit is new and its definitely my favorite part! You can walk in a tunnel underneath the polar bears as they swim.

Mount Washington and the Pittsburgh Incline

There are a couple different inclines and vantage points to see the city from Mount Washington, but I recommend the Duquesne Incline for the best view of the Three Rivers. The incline takes you from the Station Square area up to Mount Washington for a few bucks and it's worth the ride.

I had to look in my photo archives for this one, I think I may have taken this with a disposable camera! ha!
There are quite a few restaurants on Mt. Washington and if you bring your dog, it's a great area for a walk and a view!

Strip District

The Strip District is a gritty area of town that functions mostly in the mornings. There are tons of Pittsburgh memorabilia shops, Italian and Greek grocery stores, coffee shops, my favorite biscotti shop (get the bag of broken pieces, its cheap and delicious!), a fish market, and sidewalk vendors.

{via}

Make sure to stop at Deluca's for breakfast! The line can be long but its a Pittsburgh staple! Another must if you're heading to Pittsburgh is a stop at Primanti Brothers. You can order basically any sandwich and they will top it with french fries and cole slaw. It's basically impossible to eat without making a mess, but I'll totally judge you hard if you use a fork! (Both Deluca's and Primanti Brothers were on Man v. Food!)

East Carson Street/Southside

Head here for a whole row of bars, live music venues and delicious restaurants. My favorite is Nakama if you like a hibachi grill and sushi. There is another Primanti Brothers here in case you miss the original location in the Strip!

Downtown

Engagement pictures downtown! (Photo by Caitlin Thomas Photography)
The downtown area of Pittsburgh is very clean (compared to cities like NYC) and really well kept. "The Point" (Point State Park) is beautiful on a sunny day, there are lots of riverfront trails to walk or run and they have the Three Rivers Arts Festival every year there.

This was in Point State Park, though you can't see the fountain in this one
The art scene is big there, and there are some beautiful theaters downtown if you like musicals, plays or the ballet. If you're visiting in the winter, make sure to stop by PPG Place for ice skating!

Museums

Pittsburgh has great museums, including the Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Science Center, Children's Museum, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, the Mattress Factory (contemportary art), and the Heinz History Center.

Getting Around

Pittsburgh has a subway-type system called the "T" which can connect you around the city and into the suburbs. I believe it's free if you're within the downtown area, but don't quote me on that because it's been a while! There are also a lot of parking garages all over if you bring a car.

I'm sure I forgot some things so I may add to this as time goes on!

Has anyone been to Pittsburgh? I know there are a few of you from the area, would love to hear your favorite spots and restaurants too!

Friday Favorites

Hallelujah, it's Friday!

This week has been tiring between unpacking, doing approximately millions of loads of laundry, and taking care of Ruby after her surgery. I'm her least favorite person right now because as she keeps evolving and learning where we are hiding her medications, I'm forced to just stick the pill down her throat. I swear dogs are too smart for their own good sometimes!

Today I'm linking up with Amanda for my usual Friday Favorites!

One. La Croix.

Yesterday was so overcast and dreary, it was perfect for cuddling up with a book and some snacks! I've heard a ton about how much people love La Croix but I think the Lime is just so-so. What are some other good flavors I need to try?

Two. Peach Cookies.

How stinking cute are these cookies?! I feel like a total fatty constantly bringing up cookies lately but these things are SO good! They are made with a little bit of Peach Schnapps and have some sort of frosting-like filling. I've never tried to make them because they seem super complicated, but here is the most similar recipe I can find. Has anyone tried them before?!

Three. Nordstrom Pre-Fall Anniversary Sale.

Is anyone sick of hearing about this yet? Well, if you're not one of the cool kids (like me) with a Nordstrom card, you can finally shop the sale today! On my must find list: new riding boots! I'm determined to commit to a pair this year because I had to throw away my old crappy pair at the end of last winter. (P.S. That's one way to convince your husband you need a new pair... throw them out!)

I definitely suggest snagging some Zella leggings. They are my favorite and can be worn for working out or just as leggings with boots!

Four. New Recipes to try

{via}
Pizza has been my jam lately, especially the kind where you throw whatever you have on as toppings! This Roasted Cauliflower and Garlic pizza looks delish and somewhat healthy... bonus!

Also, why didn't I think of these homemade drumsticks?! You can pick your own ice cream and jimmies! I'm totally adding them to my summer bucket list!

Five. A weekend with nothing to do!

I can't wait to do absolutely nothing this weekend, who is with me?! Sometimes those are the best weekends. I really need to catch up on emails and get back into normal blogging mode because I miss it!

I hope you all have a fab weekend! It's the last one in July! Eek!

End of Summer Bucket List

It's so hard to believe it's already mid-July and summer if half over! This summer has gone by way too quickly between busy work weeks, long road trips to see family, and taking care of our little furball.

Per usual, my Type-A self felt the need to make a to-do list to make sure we don't miss out on anything this summer. And even though its still hot as balls in Charleston in September, I'm not counting that as summer so we better get to work on this list!

Go Paddleboarding on Shem Creek

We tried to do this last month and our plans were rained out, but I'm still holding on to hope that we can get it together! Shem Creek would be so pretty to see from the water!

Try a New Restaurant (or two!)

{via}
Charleston is a foodie heaven so there is definitely no shortage of restaurants to try. The problem is deciding which ones!

Summer Reading

I mentioned last week I'm trying to get back into reading in my down time so I've got a little summer reading wishlist. I need to finally finish the Husband's Secret, and then hope to move on to Where'd You Go Bernadette, the Light Between Oceans, and Gone Girl. I've also heard from y'all that the Invention of Wings and Reconstructing Amelia are good so those are on the list! Any others I'm missing?

Go to the Beach

It seems totally crazy that we live 30 minutes from the beach but haven't been there yet this summer! I also haven't made much progress on my tan, so that kind of goes hand-in-hand with this one!

See "The Bean" in Chicago

{via}
I'm heading to Chicago at the end of August and the one thing I've been wanting to see is the Bean! Anything else I need to see and/or eat while I'm there? (And hell no, I will not be visiting the Skydeck unless someone can pick me up after I pass out)

Spa Day

On the agenda during the bachelorette party is a spa day and I'm so excited! I've never had a professional massage before so you better believe I'll be signing up for one of those babies!

What are some of your must see or dos before the summer ends?!
